2011 is close to the end, so, I guess, it's time to look back and find out best music of the year.
Please suggest your faves, in any form you'd like to Smiley

As for me, here's my albums top-10 and concerts top-5.

It was extremely rich year for the new realizes. I've heard something like 60 albums of 2011. And there were two favorites - Dream Theater and Nightwish, of course. Was really interesting who will take the first place. After I heard ADTOE - the chances were very high. But, since the first listening Imaginaerum didn't leave any single doubt. So, number one of 2011 is:

Nightwish - Imaginaerum

Sorry, James, John, John, Jordan and Mike. But I'm once again blown away by Tuomas Holopainen. I don't know, how he compose such music. Each and every song of Imaginaerum is a true piece of art. The best thing ever happen with symphonic metal. Can't wait to hear the songs live in March!  Cheesy

Number two is:
Dream Theater - A Dramatic Turn of Events

Hats off to the best DT album since SFAM! Love every aspect of the album.

Number three:
Amorphis - The Beginning of Times

Good continue of the good Skyforger.

Rest of the list:
4. Powerwolf – Blood of the Saints
5. Theocracy – As the World Bleeds
6. Redemption – This Mortal Coil
7. Love.Might.Kill - Brace For Impact
8. Evergrey - Glorious Collision
9. Iced Earth - Dystopia
10. Royal Hunt – Show Me How to Live

3 WTF albums:

1. Edguy - Age of the Joker
2. Children of Bodom - Relentless Reckless Forever
3. HammerFall - Infected

Concerts top is:

1. Dream Theater, Crocus City Hall, Moscow Krasnogorsk, 12th of July
2. Iron Maiden, SKK Peterburgsky, St. Petersburg, 10th of July
3. Twisted Sister, Arena Moscow, Moscow, 1st of August
4. Royal Hunt, Mir Concert Hall, Moscow, 19th of April
5. Iced Earth, Milk small stage, Moscow, 29th of November

I decided disqualify other DT and Maiden shows I've seen, otherwise, there was no chances for other gigs to enter the top.

5. Theocracy – As the World Bleeds

I just downloaded this album - MelodicRock.com had one of the tracks up and it sounded awesome. I'll definitely want to listen to the rest of it, I guess. Wink

I'll check out some of the others on the lists above.  My top 5:

5)  Steven Wilson - Grace For Drowning
4)  The Anabasis - Back from Being Gone
3)  Neal Morse - Testimony 2
2)  Opeth - Heritage
1)  Dream Theater - A Dramatic Turn of Events

Favorite concerts:
6)  Animals as Leaders (Dead Letter Circus also kicked ass at this show)
5)  Scale the Summit (saw them 4 times opening for different acts...they are an amazing live act)
4)  Adrenaline Mob (didn't love the EP that they released, but an unforgetably awesome show)
3)  Opeth
2)  Neal Morse Band
1)  Dream Theater

(due to an extended vacation to New Zealand & Australia, I missed the 2011 Time Machine tour of Rush.  This is the first leg of a tour that I have missed in 30 years!)

I will definitely check out most albums already mentioned above.

My top 2011 albums (in random order)
1-DT - ADTOE
2-Pain of Salvation - Road to Salt 2
3-Opeth - Heritage

I've been enjoying old progrock lately - Mike Oldfield, Genesis, King Crimson etc so those 3 albums I enjoyed very much, with their references to old progrock.

Some other worthy albums I got this year:
Pendragon - Passion
Mr. Big - What If
Chickenfoot - III
Stratovarius - Elysium
Wouter Hamel - Lohengrin (dutch Jazz/Pop singer - sings in English so check him out)
Anthrax - Worship music
Anathema - Falling deeper

Well, I've listened to many good albums... hard to rank 'em all, though.

From lowest to highest...

The Good:

"Elysium"- Stratovarius
"Dystopia"- Iced Earth
"Icarus EP"- Periphery
"The Pursuit Of Radical Rhapsody"- Al DiMeola

The Great:

"No Help For The Mighty Ones"- SubRosa (I probably won't listen to this again, but personal preferences aside, it was a well-written album. Definitely a stretch for me. If anything, this album should have its own list.  Tongue)
"Lore"- Today I Caught The Plague
"The Colour Spectrum"- The Dear Hunter
"The Hunter"- Mastodon
"Iconoclast"- Symphony X
"The Collective"- Scale The Summit
"A Dramatic Turn Of Events"- Dream Theater
"Scurrilous"- Protest The Hero

The "I'm Speechless...":

"One"- TesseracT
"Weightless"- Animals As Leaders
"Heritage"- Opeth

and... wait for it...

The "Life-Changing":

"Plains Of The Purple Buffalo"- *shels

^ Pick up this album. You will not regret it.

My list from the DTforums.

Pagan's Mind - Heavenly Ecstasy
Symphony X - Iconoclast
Scar Symmetry - The Unseen Empire
Unearth - Darkness In The Light
Redemption - This Mortal Coil
Avantasia - Around the World In 20 Days
Devil Driver - Beast
Limp Bizkit - Gold Cobra
Dream Theater - A Dramatic Grammy Winner
Protest The Hero - Scurrilous

I'm a huge Theocracy fan, I just wasn't able to get my hands on the disc. I wonder if it would have made my top 10.

I feel weird, but about 75% of the albums listed in this thread are by bands I've never heard of before.

So for me, A Dramatic Turn of Events is the number 1 album of 2011.

Mike Viola's "Electro De Perfecto" is 2nd on that list.
3 would be Neal Morse's Testimony 2.

Outside of that... I've not bought any new music, outside of a couple of Christmas albums last month.

Wow I feel lame now.

I idiotically forgot one of my favorite releases of 2011.  I have listened to it so much, that I thought it was a late 2010 release!!

Scale the Summit - The Collective....easily my #2 for 2011
