Those weird questions that come to mind... I realized I'd love to know the answer to the following silly question for James: "Were you ever bothered by the fact that they made you go by your middle name to avoid confusion in the band, only to have the other Kevin leaving a couple of years later?"  Grin Grin Grin Grin

3  General Category / General Music Chat / 15th anniversary of Scenes from a Memory on: October 26, 2014, 05:40:38 am

Today marks the 15th anniversary of Metropolis pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory, the beloved "SFAM" which 99.98% of DT's fanbase loves and enjoys, and what a better way to celebrate it by annoying you with my personal story about it!

Back in the last millennium, I didn't have Internet at home, and long before the Napster days, those were the glorious days of cassette tapes, copying each other among friends cassettes whose original recording came from those lucky and rich ones who had the latest technological wonder, a CD player  Tongue So there was this habit of doing cassettes among friends, and to fill out what remained of the tape with other songs.

My cousin filled out a couple of cassettes with Dream Theater songs - he was more "evoluted" than me in his tastes at the time, so he copied for me Hollow Years and Anna Lee to not scare me too much  Tongue Also The Mirror was at the end of one of those cassettes, and after 4 months or so of listening to it, it finally clicked. Long story short, The Mirror holds the privilege of being the song that made me a fan and that started an avalanche effect that made me into a full and complete Dream Theater fan. (Should have said this back when Awake turned 15, hehe!)

Anyway, autumn of 1999, there I am, a complete Dream Theater fan totally in love and raptured by their musicianship (and of course our beloved James' voice!!!!), I don't have internet and somehow I got the notion that a new album was going to be released. Just that, I read somewhere that on the 26th of October the new Dream Theater album would be out, so I decided to blindly buy it on release day.

So, "on that fateful day" I go to the store, look around, search for it, where it is, where it is... oh, there it is.

METROPOLIS PART 2 - SCENES FROM A MEMORY

Right there and then, in the store, and not a day or a minute before, I discover that the new album is entirely made up of the sequel of the ultimate DT masterpiece. I go home, listen to it, and it's, like, the best thing ever happened to mankind after the invention of the wheel and human rights.

There have been many albums I dearly loved over the years, but the mix of the complete and total surprise (unthinkable in our age) and absolute awesomegloriouswonderfulness of the album will NEVER be topped by anything else I guess, unless a band down the line manages to completely hide from the world, until the release, the existance of a total masterpiece of an album that has a special meaning in their discography and "mythology".

Today Scenes from a Memory turns 15, and I'm listening to it with the same love and enthusiasm of 15 years ago. It was the album that SAVED Dream Theater and that rebooted their carreer into growing it as big and wide as it is today, and I think no DT fan is unaware, musical brilliance aside, of the importance of this album for the band.

Have an happy celebration of Dream Theater's finest album (at least for me), cheer up remembering one of the happiest and most creative times for the band, and, well, SPOILER - The Miracle is the real culprit and he framed Julian making him look like a killer / suicider!!!!!  Grin

Hey fellas, when I was in Tuscany last week I got inspired and decided this experiment... to give a visual form to the Count of Tuscany story  Cheesy

So on my FB page I put a series of pics that "tell" the whole lyrics (which I've written over them), I must confess I cheated a bit 'cause I wasn't in the actual wine estate that Petrucci went to, and I also used a couple of older pics from a previous trip, but still I tried to stay true to the imaginery of the song and find pics and shots that were actually related to the story.

So have (hopefully) fun "seeing" the song here:

If it's gonna be a video release, they must include:

1) The live video that animates False Awakening Suite
2) Way more important, the compilation of videos that are screened during the intermission  Grin Grin Grin Grin

And I was there in Milan!!!!!  Cool awesome show!!! I actually cussed so many times out of excitement at the surprises in the setlist, bwhahaha  Grin

Very great performance, James overall was very good and the vibe was fantastic!!!! It was my tenth concert in 15 years, hell of a way to celebrate!

I already downloaded it, but not year heard it. It's a very cool idea for a gift, they could have sold it at a very low symbolic price and still people would have bought it, but they made it completely free.... how sweet!

13  General Category / General Music Chat / Shadow Gallery love Impermament Resonance too! on: October 10, 2013, 02:42:37 pm
Well, at least some of them, actually one  Wink

Yesterday I saw Shadow Gallery performing live here in Italy, an amazing concert that would deserve a topic of its own.
After the show I talked a bit with the band members (all of them very friendly and gentle people), and while I complimented Carl Cadden-James for his contribution on James' first solo albums, he told me "hey, have you heard his latest album?" with a clear "damn, that was really good" look on his face.

So James, if you ever stumble upon this, know that not only us fans, but also your fellow musicians appreciate your solo effort(s)!!!!!  Smiley

I finally did what I always planned to do, buy the album without having heard a single note, single or streaming (even if it was legitimate) of it.

Well, I bought it on release day so I heard it just TWICE, literally; first of all, some silly impressions, the mini sticker about Live at Luna Park was the first time where I actually see the cover art, and secondly, why on earth the booklet is glued to the package? (I have the 2 disc version).

I don't really have a detailed "review" to post, I barely remember the songs at this stage, and guess what, I'm fine with it. I don't want an album I know  by heart after a week and get bored with after two, so I welcome gladly every new listening, every "forgetting" of the songs, every new discovery from time to time.

I'm not overwhemingly in love with it, but hey - I just heard it twice! I want to take all my time to fully understand what's going on with the record, so who knows, in a couple of weeks I may love it to death  Grin so, just as I enjoyed going into the album fully unspoiled, I'll enjoy this fleeting phase where every song is still new and to be discovered and remembered with each listening.

Favorite song for now is Behind the Veil, let's see how the others will hold up!

Oh, and let me brag just a little - at work I won, because of good performances, some discount tickets I could use in several kind of stores, including a musical one. Therefore, thanks to this coupon, I basically bought a brand new album in its 2 discs version for 9.99 euros  Grin

I generally don't like the growling vocals, but on this album they don't annoy me at all. If anything, they're used in the same way and approach than on Static Impulse, so I have a "been there, done that" kind of reaction, but they don't ruin the songs at all.

Now, to hear some of these songs live.......!  Cool
