Title: James LaBrie NEW CD RELEASE UPDATE
Post by: Donna on June 04, 2013, 11:23:37 am

JAMES LABRIE – New album release announced; Cover artwork unveiled!

After the much acclaimed “Static Impulse” release in 2010, Dream Theater’s Jame LaBrie is back with a powerful new studio album effort entitled “Impermanent Resonance”, to be released on July 29th, 2013 in Europe and August 6th, 2013 in North America via InsideOutMusic.

“Impermanent Resonance” was once again conceived together with LaBrie’s songwriting partner for over a dozen years now, Matt Guillory, who didn’t only take the leading role in the composing of the song material, but also handled all of the keyboard recordings as well as background vocals.

The line-up on this diverse and extremely entertaining new album also features Marco Sfogli from Italy on guitar, Ray Riendeau (Halford, Machines of Loving Grace) on bass and Dream Theater audition’s finalist Peter Wildoer (Darkane, Majestic, Arch Enemy, etc.) from Sweden on drums, making it the same line-up for the group as on the previous “Static Impulse” release. Furthermore, former Soilwork guitarist Peter Wichers was also added to the fold for songwriting and guitar recording contributions.

James LaBrie comments about “Impermanent Resonance” as follows:
“To me this album incorporates and continues with the styles and musical direction that we have created with the previous releases. The difference being that the music on this disc is to me a true telling of the songs evolving and taking on a sense of identity that is every band’s ultimate goal. It is powerful, memorable, hook-driven and above all extremely musical. It shows how the writing and the band itself have matured. I truly feel that this is our quintessential album.”

“Impermanent Resonance” was once again mixed and mastered at Sweden’s Fascination Street recording studios (Kreator, Opeth, Paradise Lost, Symphony X, etc.) with Jens Bogren and this time also Tony Lindgren. Visually, Canadian LaBrie hooked up with Gustavo Sazes / abstrata.net (Arch Enemy, Firewind, Kamelot, etc.) to capture and translate the intense album’s atmosphere into the extremely striking artwork, which can be seen above.

Some of the songs included on “Impermanent Resonance”, which combines the heaviness of Gothenburg-Sound influenced Progressive Metal with the catchiness of contemporary Rock, are
“Agony”, “Back On The Ground”, “Undertow”, “I Got You” or also “Amnesia”.

More details about the upcoming album and first sound samples will be revealed soon…

 “Impermanent Resonance” Line-Up:
 James LaBrie - Lead Vocals

Already this summer? awesome!!!

The title looks like a very very very classic "prog album title", but I'm sure it will have its meaning, James always released excellent albums with meaningful songs.... can't wait to have this one!!!!

That's one awesome song. Great energy. Sounds like great stuff to work out or go to run with. I'm not usually really a fan of growls or screams or whatever you want to call them, but it worked for me in Static Impulse and it works here too. Sounds like a continuation of that style, but I hope there some surprises there also.

Not really digging the sound of the mix/master. It's seems to be the similar as SI, but with more prominent bass. But the bass is masking the other instruments and lacks definition. Coupled with loud mastering this just sounds muddy and flat to me. Typical loudness war sound that makes also SI a bit hard for me to listen to.

I'm hoping that at least the new DT album will get a sound that breathes, has clarity and dynamics... but that's most likely just wishful thinking. That kind of sound you don't hear too often these days.

Anyhow really looking forward to hearing the rest of the songs.

Anspieltipps: Undertow, I Got You, Destined To Burn, Amnesia, Back On The Ground

Well I've checked the samples and I must admit it's not my type of music. Totally don't get it, too much effects, keyborad's parts are just 100% pop, lyrics are like love, love and no balls. Sorry, love mullmuzzler 1&2 and Elements and half of Static, but I won't buy the new record.

cheers
Mike

Keep in mind the CD style is Gutenberg styled Metal. so there is more of a "pop" hooks, but its what is the style in europe.

It obviously not everyone's cup of tea, it is different, and refreshing for many of us.

Sorry to say, but yet another tremendous album, good melodic vocals, nice leads, strong rhythm section, ruined by the adolescent growling vocals. There ARE rockers out here that are old enough to know music and know growls belong in death metal, not anything else.

I've given it only one spin so far and here are my 2 cents.

Like with the previous record, much of its success rests with Matt Guillory's incredible grasp of melodic sound. To me, it was too light and pop and not heavy sounding enough (Static Impulse was, for that matter), but I would be lying if I said i didn't start nodding to the rhythms, and some of the melodies got stuck in my head right away. Still, I have this nugging feeling that structure-wise, and musically, too, the album is 2-3 songs being re-hashed over and over again, to me there were no songs that really stood out, it's all kind of smooth and alike-sounding. I kinda wish the instrumental parts and especially drums were more diverse. The vocals are amazing though, James's voice doesn't sound a least bit forced, and he's really giving it all. The screams and growls don't bother me at all on this one- I hardly noticed they're in there.

As much as I'm not used to the pop side of it, I'm definitely digging the album. It's gonna sit in my ipod for quite a while.

Title: Re: James LaBrie NEW CD RELEASE UPDATE
Post by: MichalIwanio on July 31, 2013, 03:04:51 pm
Well I think that we've got two different teams on the cd. Hard rockers - Marco, Peter und melo pop team - Matt and James. I must say I hate Matt's sound on this record. It sounds like f* techno, I think he is a great player, but this time his selection of presets to me is just awful. The voice of Pirate James is also not in my type. He is my favorite singer, but I expected much more power and heaviness. Of course I love his light and breathy tone, but with such lyrics the magic is lost. I think they could write much better lyrics. That's for sure.

That is my impression after listening to the album twice.
C'mon guys if it's gotta be pop, let's make it more ambitious.
